I snorted cocaine at the Er
I have learned and seen some crazy things at the Er but yesterday toped them all. Being a nurse for the last 5 yrs still qualifies me as a new nurse not a seasoned one. So when I saw an order on my screen that said cocaine nasal at bedside for doctor I was floored. What!? Really that says cocaine right I ask the season nurse sitting bedside me. Yes you haven't heard of that? Umm no. What the heck is it used for. So to educate those that don't know it's a great vasoconstrictor. The patient had a really bad nose bleed and the older doctors still use it to control the bleeding. Wow is all I could say. I would have a field day with that had i been the patient. I have a legal reason to have crack in my system...lol or hey everyone I went to the Er and snorted cocaine legally lol. I know I am sick. But hey that would be funny As hell. Dear mom I promise i never did drugs till yesterday in the Er I snorted cocaine. It was great. Could you see your mom now?? Mine would still bust my ass. Still learning new things everyday.

Wait, real cocaine? Seriously? Or did I read that wrong?
I would have gone with ice and tissues. LOL, I never heard of that one. And if a doc even suggested it for me, I'd flip out.
Ha, I know some people that woould purposefully make their noses bleed for the antidote!
I used to work in a small hospital and we kept liquid cocaine in the locked fridge just for this reason. I was there for over2 and a half years and that bottle was never used, but it was there just in case. LOL
Um... how do you get that legally? I mean the side effects alone of that... I understand, an order for beer for a patient to prevent DTs when they are in for something totally different, but cocaine? Ok I am totally sure you live in the sticks now :-)
and in our hospital... for pain we gave nabilone, or in other words - synthetic MJ....still used btw...
Gah you guys ever heard of lidocaine, its a dervivitive and used every day. many plastic surgeons use liquid cocaine for rhinoplasty it is a schedualed drug and its cheap and works well.
Thanks for your information!
It's a liquid, comes from Pharmacy-we had bottles containing 4cc. We used it for nasal surgery in the OR. The doctor makes cotton pledgets or uses nasal tampons & soaks them in the cocaine. All the solution must be accounted for. (and we weren't "in the sticks"!) Some of the older methods still work best.
I see it on a semi frequent basis. I'm a nurse currently working in day surgery and our ENTs like to use it on extensive septo/tubinoplasties/FESS etc. It's pretty sweet. They coat some packing with the cocaine mixture and stuff it up into the sinus cavity. Works like a charm.
